Turkey Itineraries: 1 Week, 10 Days and 2 Weeks

The three itineraries below cover the classic Turkey journey — Istanbul, Cappadocia, and the Aegean or Mediterranean coast — at different time depths. They are starting points, not rigid schedules. The Classic Turkey Triangle

Almost every first-time Turkey itinerary covers the same three zones: Istanbul (history, culture, food), Cappadocia (geological wonder, hot air balloons, underground cities), and the coast (beaches, ancient ruins, gulet sailing). The logistics of moving between them have been well-established for decades: fly domestically between Istanbul and Kayseri (for Cappadocia), and between Istanbul and whichever coastal airport serves your chosen destination (Dalaman for Fethiye, Bodrum Airport for Bodrum, Antalya Airport for Antalya).

One Week in Turkey (7 Days)

Seven days is tight for Turkey. You can do it well if you focus rather than trying to cover everything.

Days 1-3: Istanbul

Day 1: Arrive, check in, recover. Evening walk along the Bosphorus at Karakoy and dinner in Beyoglu. The combination of jet lag and the scale of Istanbul makes a relaxed first evening better than an ambitious one.

Day 2: Sultanahmet. Start at the Hagia Sophia when it opens at 9am (arrive by 8:45am to beat the first tour buses). Cross the square to the Blue Mosque, then walk to Topkapi Palace (book tickets online beforehand). Afternoon: Grand Bazaar. Evening: dinner in Karakoy.

Day 3: Bosphorus and the Asian side. Morning Bosphorus ferry from Eminonu (the 10:35am public ferry is the classic option). Afternoon: cross to Kadikoy and explore the Asian side market. Evening: return to European side, dinner at a fish restaurant in Besiktas or Karakoy.

Days 4-5: Cappadocia

Day 4: Fly Istanbul to Kayseri (1h 20min). Transfer to Goreme (75 min). Check in. Afternoon: Goreme Open Air Museum, walk Rose Valley at sunset. Book your balloon flight for the following morning.

Day 5: Balloon flight at dawn (5am departure). Return by 8am. Recover with breakfast. Afternoon: rent a scooter and explore Love Valley and Devrent Valley. Sunset at Uchisar Castle.

Days 6-7: Coast (Antalya or Fethiye)

Day 6: Fly Kayseri or Nevsehir to Antalya (or connect through Istanbul). Check in. Afternoon in Kaleici (old town), walk to the Roman harbour. Evening dinner in the old town.

Day 7: Half-day at Konyaalti beach or a day trip to Aspendos Roman theatre. Afternoon flight home or overnight to continue.

One-week verdict: Just enough for a meaningful experience. Ruthlessly prioritise — do not add Ephesus or Pamukkale to this schedule without removing something else.

Ten Days in Turkey

Ten days allows the classic triangle at a comfortable pace with room for one additional experience.

Days 1-4: Istanbul

Day 1: Arrive, settle, explore Karakoy and Beyoglu in the evening.

Day 2: Sultanahmet. Hagia Sophia (9am opening), Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace. Grand Bazaar in the afternoon. Evening: Istiklal Caddesi.

Day 3: Bosphorus. Morning Bosphorus ferry tour (10:35am departure, returns around 3:30pm). Afternoon: Spice Bazaar and Eminonu. Balik ekmek from the boats for lunch. Evening: cross to Kadikoy.

Day 4: Istanbul at your own pace. Choose from: Dolmabahce Palace, Chora Church (mosaics), the Archaeological Museum, a neighbourhood walk in Cihangir or Balat, or a full hammam morning at Cagaloglu.

Days 5-7: Cappadocia

Day 5: Fly to Kayseri. Transfer to Goreme. Afternoon: Goreme Open Air Museum. Evening: first views of the valley from Goreme hill.

Day 6: Balloon flight at sunrise. Rest. Afternoon: underground city (Kaymakli, 30 min drive). Sunset at Uchisar.

Day 7: Ihlara Valley day trip — 14km gorge walk with rock churches and Byzantine frescoes. Continue to Derinkuyu underground city (the most extensive). Return to Goreme.

Days 8-10: Fethiye / Turquoise Coast

Day 8: Fly to Dalaman. Transfer to Fethiye (50 min). Afternoon: Kaleici harbour area and Lycian rock tombs above town.

Day 9: Oludeniz and the Blue Lagoon. Paragliding from Babadag if you are inclined. Afternoon: Butterfly Valley by boat.

Day 10: Kayakoy ghost village in the morning. Afternoon: transfer to Dalaman for departure flight.

Two Weeks in Turkey (14 Days)

Two weeks allows a genuinely thorough trip: the classic triangle at a relaxed pace plus either a Blue Cruise, eastern Turkey, or a deeper coastal exploration.

Days 1-4: Istanbul

Day 1: Arrive and explore Karakoy.
Day 2: Sultanahmet — Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace.
Day 3: Bosphorus ferry and Asian side (Kadikoy market, Moda neighbourhood).
Day 4: Free day — hammam morning, Dolmabahce Palace, or the Istanbul Modern art museum. Evening: long dinner with raki and meze in Beyoglu.

Days 5-7: Cappadocia

Day 5: Fly to Kayseri. Goreme arrival. Goreme Open Air Museum. Evening walk in Rose Valley.
Day 6: Balloon flight at sunrise. Afternoon: Kaymakli underground city or Avanos pottery.
Day 7: Ihlara Valley gorge walk. Derinkuyu underground city. Sunset at Uchisar.

Days 8-9: Ephesus and Pamukkale

Day 8: Fly Kayseri to Izmir (1 hour). Transfer to Selcuk (1 hour). Ephesus in the afternoon — arrive by 4pm when day-trippers are leaving. Stay in Selcuk.
Day 9: Morning: the Ephesus Terrace Houses (extra ticket, worth it). Drive to Pamukkale (2.5 hours). Arrive by 2pm. Walk the travertines and Hierapolis. Stay in Pamukkale.

Days 10-14: Fethiye and Turquoise Coast (or Blue Cruise)

Option A — Blue Cruise (4 nights from Fethiye):
Day 10: Drive or transfer from Pamukkale to Fethiye (2.5 hours). Board gulet.
Days 11-13: Cruise Fethiye to Marmaris via Butterfly Valley, Bozburun, and secluded coves.
Day 14: Disembark Marmaris. Transfer to Dalaman or Bodrum for departure.

Option B — Fethiye and coast:
Day 10: Pamukkale to Fethiye. Afternoon: Kayakoy.
Day 11: Oludeniz and Butterfly Valley.
Day 12: Gulet day trip around the bay. Afternoon: Fethiye market.
Day 13: Drive to Bodrum (3 hours). Afternoon: Bodrum Castle.
Day 14: Bodrum peninsula beaches. Departure from Bodrum Airport.
